What is the Google Ad Grants Programme?

Google Ad Grants is Google’s in-kind advertising programme for registered charities. Eligible organisations receive up to $10,000 a month in free Google Search advertising (billed in your local currency, so the exact GBP value moves with the exchange rate) — enough to appear at the top of results for terms like “donate to homeless charity UK” without paying for the click.

The critical difference from SEO: this budget isn’t evergreen. It’s a live account that Google monitors monthly, and if your performance drops below its thresholds, the grant is suspended — not paused, not throttled, switched off. Treat it as a managed asset, not a set-and-forget donation.

Are You Eligible? (UK-Specific)

Before building any campaign, confirm the basics:

  • Registered charity status. You need active registration with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, OSCR (Scotland), or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.
  • Verification through Goodstack. This is Google for Nonprofits’ current validation partner (it replaced TechSoup in 2026). Verification typically takes 3–14 business days, followed by a separate website compliance review.
  • Exclusions. Hospitals, healthcare organisations, schools, academic institutions, and universities are not eligible — unless they operate a distinct charitable arm or foundation.
  • CICs need a separate charitable entity. A Community Interest Company on its own does not qualify.

Budget on 2–5 weeks between starting your application and having a live account.

Keyword Strategy Under the Grant’s Rules

Ad Grants keywords aren’t chosen the same way as SEO keywords, because the programme restricts what you’re allowed to bid on:

  • No single-word keywords — every keyword needs two or more words, with narrow exceptions for branded terms and named medical conditions.
  • No overly generic terms — “donate,” “charity,” or “help” alone will be rejected or tank your Quality Score.
  • Favour transactional and navigational intent over informational. Your $10,000 is finite and capped at roughly $2 per click on standard bidding, so it works hardest on searches close to a decision — “donate to [cause] London,” “volunteer with [charity name]” — rather than broad research queries like “what causes homelessness,” which are better served by organic content that doesn’t cost you a click.

Using Your SEO Data to Fund Smarter Ad Grants Campaigns

Where the original relationship runs Ads → SEO, it also runs in reverse, and most charities under-use this direction:

  1. Identify which pages already rank organically and convert well.
  2. Extract the exact phrasing donors use to reach those pages.
  3. Bid on that language in Ad Grants, particularly your own branded terms — your charity’s name, campaign names, appeal names. You likely already rank highly for these organically, so ads on them tend to post a high CTR with little competition, which helps offset lower-performing generic ad groups elsewhere in the account.
  4. Reinvest the resulting Quality Score headroom into slightly more competitive, still-specific terms.

Compliance Checklist for Google Ad Grants

This is the section most guides underweight, and the one that determines whether you keep the grant:

  • 5% CTR, account-wide, every month. Falling below it for two consecutive months puts the account at risk of suspension. Performance Max campaigns are currently exempt from this calculation.
  • $2 maximum cost-per-click on manual bidding — but Smart Bidding strategies (Maximize Conversions, Target CPA) remove the cap entirely, and most accounts created since April 2019 are required to use Smart Bidding anyway.
  • Quality Score of 3 or higher on every live keyword; anything below must be paused or rewritten.
  • Conversion tracking installed and working. Mandatory if you’re on Smart Bidding, which most accounts now are.
  • Geo-targeting limited to where you actually operate. Don’t run ads nationally if you only deliver services in Manchester.
  • Landing pages that match the ad and contain substantial, functioning content — no under-construction pages, no purely commercial activity, no mismatch between what the ad promises and what the page delivers.
  • No political or partisan messaging.

FAQ

Is Google Ad Grants actually free? The ad spend is free, but running it well isn’t. Someone needs to build and monitor the account — realistically several hours a month — or the CTR and Quality Score requirements will quietly lapse and the account will be suspended.

How long does it take to get approved? Goodstack verification runs 3–14 business days, then a website compliance review adds another 3–10. End to end, most UK charities are looking at 2–5 weeks before the account goes live.

Does strong SEO help my Ad Grants account, or is it the other way round? Both directions work. Ads data tells you which keywords actually convert, which sharpens your SEO content plan. In reverse, pages that already rank well organically make excellent low-competition, high-CTR branded ad terms.

What happens if my account gets suspended? You’ll need to identify and fix the specific compliance issue — usually CTR, Quality Score, or a keyword policy violation — then request a reactivation review through Google Ad Grants support. This is avoidable with monthly monitoring; it’s rarely a surprise if someone’s actually watching the account.
